Olympic Street Set To Come To Life Thanks To Grant Funding Griffith City Council is thrilled to announce its success in obtaining $116,000 under the NSW Government’s Open Streets Program led by Transport for NSW.
This funding will allow Olympic Street and the Griffith Youth Precinct to be turned into a bustling hub of community engagement and entertainment.
The activation will run on Friday 22 November, Saturday 23 November and Sunday 24 November 2024, and will include a variety of events and attractions such as:
• Markets showcasing local goods and produce
• Public art installations and artist workshops
• Skate and BMX demonstrations
• A diverse range of food trucks
• Youth activities
• Live music performances
Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran said Activate Olympic Street will allow people to experience a weekend event in a different setting.
"Council's Urban Design Team are currently in the planning stages but there will be plenty of events and activities to transform Olympic Street into an accessible and pedestrian friendly zone," said Councillor Curran.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how the event brings this popular youth precinct and surrounding streets to life.”
The Open Streets Program is designed to temporarily close streets to vehicles and open them to people, transforming spaces with dynamic placemaking activations. The Program aims to inject vibrancy into our streets, fostering thriving local places that support businesses, creative sectors, and the wider community through engaging events and activities.
Minister for Roads, Arts, Music and the Night-Time Economy, Jobs and Tourism John Graham said: “We’re excited to support this event in Griffith.”
“Too often our main streets are something we drive through, rather than drive to. Our streets are a critical part of our public and social infrastructure. Great streets make great towns and centres and reflect the local community and culture.
welcoming public event spaces.”
“The colour and diversity of the program’s 130 events celebrates the unique personality of each town or suburb. This is what our vibrancy agenda is all about, backing locals to create events and entertainment that works for their local community.”
