Sewage Treatment
Griffith Sewerage System
The Griffith sewerage system comprises a network of reticulation pipes, trunk mains, 28 pumping stations and a treatment plant on the western side of town. The system serves residential, commercial and industrial development in Griffith, extending to Collina in the north, Yoogali in the east and Hanwood in the south.
The new Griffith Water Reclamation Plant (GWRP) was completed in May 2012 at a cost of $26M. It is a state-of-the-art Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) type plant and at the time of commissioning, the largest of its type in NSW.
The plant uses membranes in its final treatment stage to remove organics, bacteria, and virus down to 0.05 microns in size, thus producing an extremely high-quality effluent. Treated effluent is discharged to the Murrumbidgee Irrigation (MI) drainage system (under EPA licence). Council is preparing plans to re-use some of the treated effluent at the Saleyards.
For issues relating to Council's sewer treatment plants (such as odours or spills originating from the site) the Griffith City Council 24 hour Complaints Hotline Number is 02 6964 1160.
For sewer blockages/overflows or spills contact the Griffith City Council on 6962 8100 during business hours or 02 6964 1160 after hours.
Bilbul Sewerage System
The Bilbul sewerage system comprises a network of reticulation pipes, trunk mains, 1 pumping station and treatment lagoons on the south side of town. The system serves residential and commercial development in Bilbul.
The Bilbul STP was constructed in the early 1990s and utilises two non-aerated oxidation lagoons and a maturation lagoon prior to discharge into evaporation lagoons. The design capacity of the works is 310EP.
Yenda Sewerage System
The Yenda sewerage system comprises a network of reticulation pipes, trunk mains, three pumping stations and a treatment plant on the northern side of town. The system serves residential, commercial and industrial development in Yenda village.
The sewage treatment scheme at Yenda was constructed in the 1980s to service the township and treat trade waste from nearby wineries. The design capacity of the works is 34,000EP. The sewage enters two initial lagoons, which are fully mixed, aerated and operated in series, followed by two facultative lagoons operated as duty and stand-by. Three final lagoons are used for polishing before discharge into an irrigation drainage channel that leads to Mirrool Creek.
An amenities building on site contains the switchboard, chemical storage and other facilities.

Pressure Sewerage Technical Specifications
This document has been created to serve Griffith City Council in its applications of pressure sewerage systems in the following ways:
- Providing the detail required to translate Council’s Policy Statement on pressure sewerage into detailed implementation actions.
- To ensure consistency in the application of the pressure sewerage technology in the Griffith area.
- To ensure that where the pressure sewerage technology is implemented there can be an expectation it will work as it should.
- For inclusion in Supply Tenders to specify Council’s minimal requirements in terms of the pumping units, design pipe material, etc. for any pressure sewerage system installed in the Griffith area
- For inclusion in Installation Tenders to guide installers and pipe layers on Council minimal requirements in respect to pressure sewerage applications.
