Sophie Chauncy: Trails

Growing up by the banks of the Murrumbidgee, Darlington Point artist Sophie Chauncy is inspired by the energy and beauty of the MIA specifically and rural Australian bushland more broadly.

In exploring the unique Australian landscape, Chauncy draws attention to the conservation of its ecosystems articulated by both gestural and intuitive mark making layered with more traditional drawings of plants and animals. 

‘Trails’ is Sophie Chauncy’s first solo exhibition at the Griffith Regional Art Gallery. A ‘Trail’ is a mark or a series of signs and objects left behind by the passage of someone or something. Sophie’s works are a response to her surroundings during the bushwalking element of her process. A process that concerns immersing oneself into the landscape and sourcing found natural materials to inform her work. This exhibition will explore and showcase the trails we take in life and in nature, the animal tracks we’re intrigued to follow, what we find and what we leave behind. I want to explore these little happenings in nature.
