Plans In Full Swing For Activate Olympic Street

Wednesday, 30 Oct 2024

Plans In Full Swing For Activate Olympic Street Griffith City Council is gearing up for Activate Olympic Street, set to take place from Friday, 22 November to Sunday, 24 November 2024.

This event, made possible through funding from the NSW Government’s Open Streets Program led by Transport for NSW, will transform Olympic Street and the Griffith Youth Precinct into a lively, community-centred space filled with activities, entertainment, and opportunities for local businesses to engage with the public.

Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran said the Activate Olympic Street event is a fantastic initiative that will turn Olympic Street into a bustling space, encouraging connection and providing entertainment for all ages.

“It’s also an excellent opportunity for local businesses to engage with the community and I urge them to get involved if they can. I also encourage the community to support the event and our local businesses; it’s a tough time at the moment and we need to come together to get through it,” Councillor Curran said.

The weekend will offer a range of activities and attractions, including:
• Champions League 3x3 Basketball – register your team here: https://tinyurl.com/4c2bcf73
• Base Zero rock climbing
• Totem Skateboarding
• HIT99.7 Live Broadcast with giveaways on Saturday
• Playstate AKA Jordan Lucky will deliver three live paintings and two graffiti art workshops
• Visit Griffith market stalls
• Youth activities
• Food trucks
• Local entertainment
• And more

Local businesses are encouraged to participate by showcasing their products. Food and beverage vans and outlets are also urged to join in on the fun. Expressions of interest are open, and businesses can apply via this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/YFQPP6P.

Council’s Open Space Planning Officer, Jason Bertacco is encouraging local businesses to get involved in Activate Olympic Street.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase products and services to a large audience. By participating in this local event, businesses are able connect with new customers and be part of something special that brings the whole community together,” he said.

Minister for Roads, Arts, Music and the Night-Time Economy, Jobs and Tourism John Graham said:

“We’re excited to support this event in Griffith.

“Too often our main streets are something we drive through, rather than drive to. Our streets are a critical part of our public and social infrastructure. Great streets make great towns and centres and reflect the local community and culture.

“The Open Streets program is about temporarily transforming our main streets into vibrant and welcoming public event spaces.

“The colour and diversity of these 130 events celebrates the unique personality of each town or suburb. This is what our vibrancy agenda is all about, backing locals to create events and entertainment that works for their local community.”

Activate Olympic Street is one event funded under the NSW Government’s Open Streets Program. The program is designed to temporarily close streets to vehicles, creating dynamic public spaces through engaging placemaking activities. The initiative aims to inject vibrancy into our streets, fostering thriving local places that support businesses, the creative sector, and the wider community through exciting events and activities.
