Artspace Launches 2024 Program With Changing Light
Thursday, 25 Jan 2024
ArtSpace at Griffith Regional Theatre presents the first exhibition of the year – ‘Changing Light’ by local artist and visual arts teacher Brooke Jarvis. This is her first solo exhibition in Griffith, which she now calls home.Brooke Jarvis said “This is an exhibition of oil and acrylic paintings showing the mesmeric sky, vast landscape and vibrant colours of the Riverina.”
Brooke completed a Bachelor of Visual Art with First Class Honours (Painting) at the Australian National University, Canberra. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in ACT and NSW. Brooke is a two-time finalist of the Shirl National Youth Portrait Prize and the ANU Drawing Prize. She is a recipient of the ACT Legislative Assembly Prize.
“The artworks are inspired by my personal experiences of wonder and awe. Some show beauty in quiet moments while others invoke drama and emotion through colour and expressive mark making” Brooke said.
“The free-flowing acrylic pour paintings are an exploration of the possibilities of paint, texture and materiality. In these paintings birds merge with the abstract landscape creating presence and absence, and the passing of time.”
Griffith Regional Art Gallery Coordinator, Ray Wholohan said “Brooke is a dedicated, enthusiastic and a passionate artist in Griffith and beyond. She has been involved in many artistic and community driven projects at Marian Catholic College and Griffith Regional Art Gallery and with her work as a humanitarian.”
“This body of work comprises of rich and moody depictions of the Riverina landscape imbued in the tradition of Australian modernists such as Clarice Beckett and Max Meldrum,” Mr Wholohan said.
“This exhibition is for anyone with a love of atmospheric landscapes or has an affinity with cotemporary painting, art lovers or anyone looking to invest in work by significant local artists.”
Visit the ‘Changing Light’ exhibition at Griffith Regional Theatre’s ArtSpace from 26 January. Opening event on 2 February at 6pm. All welcome.
